DIY Organic Elderberry Syrup Blend

Product Overview

Bring a little of the apothecary into your own kitchen with our Organic Elderberry Syrup Blend, a thoughtfully prepared combination of organic elderberries, cinnamon, and cloves, pre-portioned and ready to simmer.

Simply add the herbal blend to water, simmer, strain, and stir in honey for a homemade elderberry syrup you can enjoy by the spoonful or add to warm water or tea. Fresh ginger can also be added for an extra warming touch.

Each blend makes approximately 2 cups of finished syrup, making it an easy way to prepare a small batch at home without measuring and sourcing individual herbs and spices.

Each blend includes:
  • Organic elderberries
  • Organic cinnamon stick
  • Organic cloves
  • Simple preparation instructions
  • You provide: 4 cups of water, 1/2 Cup of honey, and optional 1-2 inches of fresh ginger.

Key Ingredients & How They Work

Elderberries (Sambucus Nigra):

The star of the blend

Elderberries are naturally rich in anthocyanins and other polyphenols, the compounds responsible for their deep purple color.

  • How it works (MOA): These plant compounds act as antioxidants, helping neutralize reactive molecules in the body. Elderberry has also been studied for its effects on inflammatory and immune-related pathways. Small human studies suggest elderberry may help reduce the severity or duration of some upper-respiratory symptoms, but the clinical evidence is still limited
Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum):

Warm, aromatic & naturally antimicrobial

Cinnamon contains aromatic compounds such as cinnamaldehyde, which give it its characteristic flavor and aroma.

  • How it works (MOA): Cinnamaldehyde and other cinnamon compounds have demonstrated antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, including the ability to interfere with microbial cell membranes and other processes. Much of this research is laboratory-based, so it shouldn't be interpreted as cinnamon acting like an antibiotic in the body.

Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum):

A little goes a long way

Cloves are particularly rich in eugenol, a naturally occurring aromatic compound.

  • Eugenol has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activity in laboratory research. It can interact with microbial cell membranes and interfere with processes microorganisms use to survive and communicate.

Fresh Ginger (Zingiber Offinale):

Optional, but a lovely addition

Ginger contains compounds called gingerols and shogaols, which give fresh ginger its characteristic warmth and pungency.

  • These compounds interact with several biological pathways involved in inflammation, digestion, and nausea. Ginger has been studied in humans for several types of nausea and vomiting, although the research generally involves concentrated ginger preparations rather than the small amount used in a homemade syrup.

Honey- from your kitchen:

Sweetness with a purpose

Honey isn't included in your ingredient bag, but it becomes an important part of the finished syrup.

  • Honey does more than add sweetness to the finished syrup. It naturally contains sugars, enzymes, polyphenols, and other plant-derived compounds, along with a naturally acidic environment that can make it difficult for many microorganisms to grow.
  • Honey helps create a soothing coating in the mouth and throat while contributing naturally occurring antioxidant and antimicrobial properties to the finished syrup.

How To Make

  1. Add ingredient bag and 4 cups water to a saucepan. Add ginger, if desired.
  2. Bring to a boil, then simmer 40-60 minutes, until reduced by half.
  3. Remove from heat, press bag to extract liquid, and discard.
  4. Stir in ½ cup honey until dissolved.
  5. Pour into a jar and refrigerate.
  6. Enjoy: 1-2 spoonfuls daily, 1 tablespoon in hot water, or added to tea.
  7. Storage: Refrigerate up to 3 weeks.

⚠️ Important Elderberry Preparation

Elderberries must be properly cooked before consumption. Raw or undercooked elderberries can contain naturally occurring compounds that may cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Please follow the enclosed recipe card exactly, including the recommended cooking time and reduction, to ensure the elderberries are adequately cooked before consuming. Do not consume the elderberries or prepared syrup without completing the cooking process.

FAQ

Can I use this on my face?

No. This balm is formulated for external use on the body only, particularly muscles and areas that feel tight or fatigued. Avoid sensitive areas like the eyes or face.

Will it feel hot?

This balm provides a gentle warming sensation from ginger and cayenne, balanced by a cooling touch from menthol. The heat is soothing, not intense. If you feel discomfort, wash the area and discontinue use. This balm is comparable to the sensations of IceHot, Biofreeze, and CryoDerm products.

Is this product safe for all skin types?

The ingredients are generally well-tolerated, but we recommend doing a small patch test first if you have sensitive skin. This balm should not be applied on any open skin or skin lesions (irritated skin). Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

What makes this balm different from other muscle balms?

Our Sore Muscle Warming Balm is made with carefully selected botanicals, including arnica, ginger, and cayenne, infused slowly into nourishing oils to capture their natural properties. Every ingredient is chosen for its purity and connection to traditional herbal practices, creating a balm that is gentle, natural, and effective. The convenient push-up tube makes applying these plant-powered ingredients simple and mess-free.

How should I store it?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use to maintain freshness. Best used within 12 months.

Can I use this balm on children or pets?

This balm is formulated for adult use. Avoid use on children or pets, as the warming botanicals may be too strong for sensitive skin.
